When we talk about Thailand, the first visuals that come to our mind are generally beachside parties, happening Bangkok nights, lively pubs and vibrant night bars. While known for its fun nightlife and party culture, Thailand has a lot more to offer.
Did you know that Thailand is the only country that has not been colonized by any European nation? In fact, Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has always remained free and that is why it is also known as the ‘land of the free’.
Home to intricate Buddhist wats, exquisite topography and amazing local cuisine, Thailand offers everything you seek in a quintessential Asian getaway.
Sightseeing in Thailand can be tricky if you are not aware of the many things that the country has to offer. So, here is a region-wise guide to sightseeing in Thailand that will help you plan ahead for your next trip so you can make the most of your vacation.
Things to see in Thailand – North
North Thailand is a bit different from the rest of the country as it is landlocked from countries like Myanmar and Laos, forming a beautiful Golden Triangle. North Thailand is home to rolling hills and verdant mountains offering some amazing views and serene escape routes.
While there is no dearth of hidden hilly gems in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai and Pai are must-visits.
Chiang Mai
The name of this place means, ‘New City’. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural capital of Thailand because of its vibrant cultural offerings— from Elephant-proof moat to giant gates, and a defensive wall surrounding the whole city. Small lakes, gushing waterfalls and sprawling botanical gardens in Chiang Mai will offer you an ideal nature getaway.
Pai
This riverside city is less crowded and has a calmer vibe. Pai is ideal for the solo traveller who loves to trek and set up camps in secluded forests and hilltops.
Other places in North Thailand worth considering include Mae Hong Son, Chiang Deo and Lampang.

What to see in Thailand – East
East Thailand is that middle cousin who gets lost when all the family members stand in a line, however, he tells the best jokes. Don’t get me wrong, East Thailand has a lot to offer but somehow, it is wedged geographically between central Thailand and Cambodian border, and is often overlooked by tourists.
I strongly recommend including places like Koh Chang and Chanthaburi from the eastern part of Thailand to include in your sightseeing itinerary.
Koh Chang
Koh Chang is the second-largest island in Thailand after Phuket. Home to a free admission national park, several stunning beaches and vibrant local markets, this island is a hidden gem.
Some of the beaches you must visit when in Koh Chang are Khlong Phrao, Had Sai Kao (White Beach) and Had The Nam (Lonely Beach). Go picnicking with your family or friends or relax on the beachside with your partner.
Chanthaburi
Stroll through French Colonial shophouses with an attractive riverfront when in Chanthaburi. You might also catch a glimpse of local gem traders, fruit stalls and flower shops on the streets all next to each other. Chanthaburi is also home to the iconic eponymous noodles that are used mostly in all of the pad thai.
Pattaya
Pattaya is yet another place worth considering a visit. Although be warned the beaches here are not necessarily very clean. But, you can come here for the nightlife, floating market, walking street and central festive mall.

Things to see in Thailand – South
South Thailand attracts thousands of globetrotters every year and is the unofficial torchbearer of Thailand tourism. Home to splendid beaches, breathtaking bays and ancient temples, South Thailand offers it all.
It can be difficult to choose where to go sightseeing in Thailand in this part of the country but I have selected some of the best ones to make things simpler for you.
Koh Tao
If you are a diver you must visit Koh Tao island. Home to rich marine life and amazing coral formations, this is the go-to place for divers. You can also get PADI certification courses here if you wish to enhance your diving skills.
Ko Pha Ngan
A must-visit for party lovers, Ko Pha Ngan offers a lively night scene. Ngan’s full moon party is the big ticket event that you would not want to miss if you are visiting this part of Thailand because it is so exclusive to this place, that one can’t afford to miss it.
Phuket
The list can go on when it comes to southern Thailand but no list can end without mentioning Phuket! Phuket is like the seashell of Thailand, that you have to look at if you are at the beach.
This place has a lot of party destinations, serene beaches, amazing spa resorts, fun markets and scenic viewpoints with amazing photo ops that will for sure rock your Thai trip.

What to see in Thailand (West)
Now coming to yet another underrated, but beautiful part of Thailand, West Thailand. West Thailand shares a border with Myanmar and is ideally divided into six geographical regions – Kanchanaburi, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ratchaburi and Tak. This part of the country has some amazing sightseeing spots but Kanchanaburi and Sangkhlaburi are must-visits.
Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi is all about sobering prisoners of war cemeteries and evidence of World War 2 deaths. Remember the film, Bridge on the River Kwai, that was shot here. So, if you want to immerse yourself in some history and see another side of this country, you must visit Kanchanaburi.
Sangkhlaburi
Famous for its photogenic wooden bridge, Sangkhlaburi is a secluded natural haven. This place is ideal for hanging out on a hammock and reading those books that you have been buying but not reading. Come here solo for a quiet retreat.
