The history of modern Dubai
Before we step into what to do in the city, let’s find out more about the city.
Back in 1833, Dubai had started off as a small settlement by some 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe, who were attracted to the natural harbour created by the creek flowing through Dubai. They quickly turned the oasis into a small centre for fishing and pearling and were joined by the Arabian nomads of the Middle East called Bedouins.
Fast forward to the 1960s, Dubai’s economy started to grow and by 1969, Dubai started developing rapidly. This has continued unabated throughout the decades and has transformed the city into one of the most luxurious places in the world.
Let’s jump straight into the 10 best places to visit in Dubai.
Ain Dubai & Madame Tussauds Dubai
Dubai has to its credit some of the most astounding record-breaking attractions and one of the latest attractions to be added to this extensive repertoire is Ain Dubai. Located at the city’s waterfront neighbourhood of Bluewaters Island, it is the world’s largest and highest observation wheel. A rotation in one of its air-conditioned capsules will take you up to a height of over 250 meters, allowing you to see the whole of the island and the sights that dot across JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence), Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah from a distinct standpoint.
Right next to Ain Dubai at Bluewaters Island is Madame Tussauds Dubai, which is the first and only museum of its kind in the Middle East. You will find here the life-size wax statues of your beloved personalities that represent politics, movies, fashion, music, sports, entertainment and more.
The View at the Palm
It is very rare that people don’t know the man-made island of Palm Jumeirah and its unrivalled palm-tree-like design complete with a crescent on top. The View at the Palm is the region’s only observation deck that is created to give the full view of this island and beyond. Found on the 52nd level of Palm Tower (whose entry is through Nakheel Mall), it makes a risk-free cum affordable alternative over other options that are available to see this island in its entirety, such as helicopter rides, sky diving and seaplane tour.
Burj Khalifa
Whether you have been to Burj Khalifa or not, there is no way that you can go to Dubai and not see this colossal structure in the ultra-stylish neighbourhood of Downtown Dubai. It is the world’s tallest building (at a height of 828 meters.) If it is your debut visit, make sure that you visit its ‘At The Top’ observation deck on its 124th or 148th level. It comes with the fastest elevator ride and further lets you see the whole of Dubai lying under your feet. You can also watch an interesting multimedia exhibit on Dubai’s transformation from a modest village to an international tourist spot.
The Dubai Mall & Dubai Fountain Show
This is one of the best places to visit in Dubai. Situated in Downtown Dubai and adjacent to Burj Khalifa, it is more than a place to shop, with its 1200-plus outlets. In fact, it hosts the major chunk of things to do and experience in the city. See over 33,000 marine creatures and other attractions at its Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo and indulge in some exciting rides and thrilling experiences at VR Park Dubai and Ekart Zabeel to name a few. It is an all-age facility and a great place for kids too, thanks to attractions like KidZania Dubai and Dubai Ice Rink.
Moreover, don’t leave the mall or downtown itself without watching the Dubai Fountain dancing show where its immaculate harmony of water and music is an absolute delight to your senses.
Sky Views Dubai
Dubai has some fantastic viewpoints across the city, but Sky Views Dubai within Address Sky View Hotel (at Emaar Square) is simply like no other. Apart from its observation deck that spans over the hotel’s two levels, it gives you the chance to participate in two exhilarating experiences. The includes the Middle East’s first-of-its-kind Glass Sky Slide that allows for a smooth ride along the transparent glass ride (from the 53rd to 52nd level), and the Edge Walk – the first of its kind hands-free walk experience in the region.
Museum of the Future
Hands down, this is probably the most futuristic museum in the world and the name says it all! See the flying objects, ride in capsule-like elevators and sip coffee prepared by robots, among many other breathtaking experiences, as you explore and be in awe at its diverse levels and various exhibits.
More than that, it is a true architectural masterpiece where its ring kind of shiny structure with a hollow part in the middle will take your breath away. There is an observation deck which gives the most unparalleled views over the museum as well as the surroundings. Museum of the Future is located at Sheikh Zayed Road and is easily one of the best places to visit in Dubai.
Desert Safari
Dubai may be a stylish city surrounded by glitz and glamour all over, but it has its share of untouched natural beauty too. A brief drive of about 40 minutes away from the city centre will lead you to the region’s seemingly barren yet in real full of life desert landscape. While you can discover it on your own, it is recommended to take a fully guided desert safari.
Besides offering you an authentic overview of desert life, it enables you to participate in a spectrum of adventurous and cultural experiences like 4X4 dune bash, camel ride, Shisha smoking, and henna tattooing. Add a session of BBQ dining and traditional shows (including Tanura) by choosing an evening or overnight desert safari.
IMG Worlds of Adventure
Dubai is called the theme park capital of the world. Experience it for yourself when you visit its many amazing theme parks, particularly IMG Worlds of Adventure. It is one of the world’s largest indoor theme parks where you can make the most of its four zones, featuring rides, games and other attractions centred on Marvel superheroes, cartoon characters, and primitive dinosaurs.
It is a great place to bring the family and one of the best places to visit in Dubai.
Dhow Cruise at Dubai Marina
Dubai Marina is famed for its stunning architectural delights which are at their best in the night. So, why not see them with a traditional twist by going on an evening dhow cruise at Dubai Marina? It involves an approximately two hours sail down the marina aboard a rustic-style wooden Arabian vessel. Dependent on your cruise package, it not only lets you see Dubai’s resplendently illuminated sights but also enjoy a lavish buffet dinner plus complimentary refreshments and watch live entertainment shows onboard.
