Go behind the scenes of a safari in Botswana, Africa

We had a chance to go behind the scenes of a unique safari in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Organised by Arcadia Expedition, called ‘Okavango Through the Lens’ which discovers the Okavango Delta from three perspectives – exploring bush, desert and water environments.

This 13-day expedition is led by legendary master filmmaker and wildlife photographer Greg Nelson. The award-winning filmmaker and nature documentarist will take tourists through the astonishing biosphere of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Greg will share his vast knowledge and help clients create a personal photo book, photo essay or film of their Okavango experience.

Why Botswana?

Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa and offers visitors a lush, vibrant and exciting time. The country is best seen as being part of the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, which gives way to seasonal flooding.

This mid-sized country with just over 2.3 million people is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. In fact, about 10 percent of the total population of Botswana lives in the capital and largest city, Gaborone.

For tourists, most come for the amazing wildlife and safari experience. The terrain and harshly beautiful land is a magnet for wildlife. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is home to numerous animals including giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs. The country is around 90% covered in savanna, mixed woodland-grassland ecosystem, varying from shrubbery in the southwest, which is drier to tree and grass savanna in the areas with more rain.

Even under these difficult conditions of the Kalahari Desert, Botswana is home to more than 2500 species of plants and 650 species of trees. This makes a must-visit for nature enthusiasts around the world.

The safari is offering a learning experience for tourists to discover the uniqueness and beauty of the country. Throughout the expedition, a number of resident experts will join the group’s ‘travelling dinner party’ for evening meals in camp. Other highlights include:

Limited to just 12 people, the expedition promises a personal and exclusive feel that will truly enhance your experience. The Botswana safari begins with a spectacular private air safari, flying low over the Delta and following the Cubango River into Namibia, before landing in our mobile tented bush camps in the wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve.

Guest then venture out to a remote desert camp situated on an immense salt pan on the edge of the Kalahari. This expedition concludes with an exclusive waterborne expedition through the Okavango Delta itself on boats custom made for game viewing. Here you will be based on a remote island in a specially prepared mobile tented camp.
